For stunning visual impact, this one’s hard to beat. The Shapeshifter features kayaker Ben Marr and his outlandishly talented playboating skills in some really high water in the Quebec spring. Most kayakers would have one hell of a time keeping up with this river’s torrid pace, but Marr makes it look like Sunday brunch, eating up these waves like a ravenous beast. To top it all off, and where this NRS film by Forge Motion Pictures REALLY shines, is when he straps on a bright red flare to the back of his boat to charge these waters in the dark of night.
The makers of this film were undoubtedly looking for a bit of an otherworldy approach to paddling these scary waters, as they state in the film’s intro: “The supernatural… does it exist? The curious explore unbound by restrictions of place and mind and perhaps discover things we haven’t understood. Legend whitewater kayaker Ben Marr shreds the upper reaches of Quebec, pushing limits to new and undiscovered levels.”
